The VW Type 4 was also delivered abroad. Abroad there was always less equipment than in Germany, much less exterior colors and interiors as well. These restrictions were extremely extreme in the USA. There, all vehicles were delivered with "L" equipment and heated rear windows, but there was never a sunroof, brake servo or hinged window at the front or rear and only very few colors and even fewer interior fittings. A color was only ever available with an interior design.

 Italy:

Typical for Italian VW Type 4 were the white flashing lights.

Scandinavia:

Adapted to the Scandinavian weather conditions, the vehicles had larger heat exchangers and, for an extra charge, oil pan preheating.

For 1974 year all 412s for Sweden had a headlight washer system, including a tank in the trunk, an electric pump and jets on each headlight, due to a Swedish law. The headlights were flushed when the windscreen was flushed, but only when the headlights were on (There was also a separate electric pump for the windscreen).

South Africa:

Right-hand drive vehicles were delivered to customers in South Africa, which had previously been completed in a South African plant from kits exported there.

Two round reflectors were required - white at the front and red at the back.

On request, the vehicles could be tuned to the "Grand Prix" by Superperformance Johannesburg between 1970-72. There were 40 such vehicles in total.

The rebuild includes a large number of options such as Rallye Mag wheels (a nice style) and lowered front suspension (minus 76mm!), plus a set of adjustable Koni shock absorbers all round (total cost R232-00, plus installation) and an unspoken requirement would be radial tires on the Rallye Mags.

There is also a wide range of optional equipment to improve the instruments and controls (see table "Specifications"), totaling approximately R 150-00.

USA

Two design changes made the Type 4 export to the USA possible. To comply with US regulations, the VW 411 E got an activated charcoal canister in the petrol ventilation.

In addition, the VW 411 E/ 80 hp could also be supplied with an automatic transmission on request. This VW 411 E automatic was also approved for towing a trailer.

The 72 hp engine variant was intended for the VW 412 export to California, since very strict emission laws applied there.

Finally, the US versions received reinforced doors.

While Germany switched back to the 2-carburetor system in the fall of 1973, the US market continued to have engines with electronic injection.

Furthermore, the vehicles for the America export had a striking characteristic feature - the thick bumpers with impact element.

And there was now also colored all-round glazing for US exports.
