The VW Type 4 is equipped with a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with self-adjusting disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. The fixed calipers of the disc brakes are located in front of the wheel axles. For the rest, both the disc brakes and the simplex drum brakes correspond in design to those of type 3.

A brake force regulator is installed in the rear axle brake circuit, which ensures that the brake force is distributed almost optimally between the front and rear axles. It prevents the rear wheels from overbraking, especially when braking the car from high speeds or when braking hard. Like the clutch master cylinder, the tandem master brake cylinder is bolted to the bearing block for the pedals and the steering column inside the car. The brake pedal is suspended.

The well-known advantages of the large 15" wheels have not been dispensed with in the VW Type 4 either. The perforated drop center safety rims (4 1/2 J x 15 with hump) are fastened with 4 wheel bolts.

Radial tires of size 155 SR 15 (tubeless) ensure good traction and safe handling, not to mention the long service life, which is a particular advantage of radial tyres.

The spare wheel is in a recess under the trunk.
