Occasionally one saw the type 4 also with authorities. Both the police and the fire brigade used the VW Type 4 as a patrol car and as an executive and command vehicle. They were more popular than the 1500/1600 because they offered more space and were available with 4 doors.

The Variant was also seen frequently because it offered plenty of space for the necessary utensils or for transporting service dogs.

The service vehicles of the police and fire brigade were always vehicles without "L" equipment. Other extras: None! So no heated rear window either.

The vehicles were also used as taxis - initially in black and later in the typical taxi color "light ivory".

Fire department:

A fire service vehicle is also part of the vehicle fleet of our association.

The only special equipment (besides the additional fire brigade equipment) is that the ELW has headrests and a second battery under the passenger seat (M558). The seats are the so-called tombstone seats (see picture), as this was the headrest variant for vehicles without an "L" ("non-removable headrest").

Here is a short CV of the VW 411 E in fire brigade version as a command vehicle (ELW):

07/19/1971 - Commissioning as an ELW at the Offenburg Volunteer Fire Department with registration number OG-NH 93

approx. 1987 - passed on to the volunteer fire brigade in Achern/Black Forest

05/06/1988 - Decommissioning and sale to Bittiger, fire brigade supplies

06/14/1989 - Shutdown due to engine failure

03/16/1991 - Purchase by Hilmar Walde

07/01-03/02 - Restoration of the vehicle

Particularities:

The vehicle is one of the few known Type 4 models with original fire service equipment. It is currently the only known vehicle that is roadworthy. The special equipment with speakers, double flashing lights and additional headlights is original. The siren was removed when it was decommissioned.

The vehicle has already been described in various publications (Mayer-Stein: The big VW, 1994, VW Scene 11/96) and served the Minichamps company in 2005 as a template for an identical scale model "Feuerwehr Offenburg" with the original registration number OG-NH 93 1:43 (item no.: 400 051112).
